Rectory Farm

The brief for this busy farm shop and PYO was to create a play scheme for younger children using natural materials to provide an aesthetic blend of country ambience and satisfying play value. The scheme comprises four separate play items: a stepping stone area with bridge timbers; a crawl-tunnel mini-house; a high-deck duo tower with slide; and a nest swing set.

Description

Robinia timber as used here is the optimum choice for a natural and long-lasting play area. Being a naturally rot-proof hardwood it does not require treating, and can be placed in the ground with no detrimental effect. It therefore carries a 15 year guarantee against rot.

Four different items were used in this play area, giving a variety of attractions for young children.

A shallow ditch was created, with a series of timber ‘bridges’ laid across it. Nearby is a series of stepping-stones of low vertical timbers set in the ground.

A bespoke mini-house was built, with an integral crawl tunnel going from side to side. At each end of the house seating benches were constructed, with a pitched roof in the same Robinia timber.

Continuing the natural look is a high-deck duo tower with net bridge, two deck heights, climbing and crawl nets and green, heavy duty rotomoulded plastic slide.

The nest swing frame is constructed using heavy duty play grade robinia timber, with a commercial grade nest swing seat suspended on steel reinforced ropes and stainless steel chain.
